I love Polka Dancing!!!
Don't laugh, it's fun. From the ages of seventeen till twenty four, I was a Polish folk dancer with a group of Polish college students. We belonged to The Polish Intercollegiate Club of Philadelphia. We were the PKM (it's Polish and too long to translate) Dancers.
It was a fun group of young college students and we performed at many wonderful functions. The highlight of my folk dance days was when our group tried out for the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour, the equivalent of today's America's Got Talent (your grandparents will probably remember the show). We made the cut and got to go to New York and perform on TV. We actually got enough votes to come back a second time. We did not win again, but it was fun. We got to meet and hang out with lots of musicians from many states those days.
I still am happiest when I hear, and dance to, my favorite Polka Bands. It's in my blood and keeps me feeling young.
I'll be a Polish Princess Forever!!!
Wow, going to the Ted Mack Amateur Hour really sounds like fun. I didn't know that polka dancing could get you so far and on TV to boot. Having that experience must have expanded your view of the world and given you skills that probably still serve you to this day. Did your group have professional pictures taken to promote it?
ReplyDeleteI've done the Mexican Hat dance in school, but we never entered any contests.
You've had your 15 minutes of fame.
Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteYes, we had many photos taken as a group. Looking back at them is fun. Wow, I was young, thin, and kinda cute then. A couple of years ago i tried to get into one of my vests and it ripped right up the back. Guess I'm a different size now!!! Since you asked, and seem interested in seeing a group shot, I'll make the effort to scan and share one of those delightful, vintage shots with you!!?? Thanks for the response. It was fun to receive one.
